Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to visit the Center before the procedure date?

No.  You will receive calls from business office staff related to your insurance co-pay and from nursing staff to verify health history information and go over instructions within the week before your procedure.

What should I wear?

Loose, comfortable clothing and comfortable shoes.  Avoid shoes like flip flops that do not provide support or stability in walking.

Why must I refrain from eating and/or drinking prior to the procedure?

Although one of the least desirable “rules” before surgery, this instruction is very important for the protection of your airway during anesthesia. Your surgery may be cancelled if you do so.

Should I take my usual daily medication?

Take any medications that your physician has suggested the morning of surgery with a small sip of water.   To view a list, please refer to  the day of surgery checklist.

May I continue my herbal medications?

Please stop all herbal medications immediately, but you may continue your vitamin regimen.

Who may accompany me?

If you are having anesthesia, you will need to have someone over the age of 18 remain at the surgery center during your procedure to receive discharge instructions, drive you home, and stay with you for 24 hours after your surgery. Please make arrangements ahead of time.

Will I receive sedation before going into the procedure room?

Please refer to the Anesthesia Page.

Should I bathe and wash my hair before leaving home?

Shower the night before or morning of your procedure.  You may wash your hair and use an anti-bacterial soap (preferred) for your body.  Avoid perfumes, lotions and deodorants the morning of surgery.

What should I do if I am not feeling well?

If you are ill with fever, chest cold, vomiting or diarrhea just before the day of your surgery, please contact your surgeon’s office; he or she may contact us to discuss the possibility of postponing your procedure.

What should I do if I believe that I am pregnant?

Please discuss with your surgeon if you think that you may be pregnant.  It is not recommended to follow through with elective surgery when pregnant.  If surgery is necessary due to an injury, your surgeon will want to schedule your procedure at the hospital.

May I drive home?

If you are having anesthesia, you will need to have someone over the age of 18 drive you home, receive discharge instructions, and stay with you the night of surgery.  Please make arrangements ahead of time.

What if I have special needs?

Please let your nurse know at the time of your pre-operative phone call if you have any special needs so that we can be prepared to assist you on the day of your procedure and to discuss what equipment that you should bring with you.

What must I bring with me on the day of the procedure?

  • Insurance and prescription card (if separate card)
  • Cash or credit card to pay your co-pay or co-insurance as well as if you wish to fill your prescription at our in house pharmacy
